Rising sign calculator: your ascendant, free and exact to the degree
Your rising sign is the sign that was coming up in the east when you were born. With your birth time and place it is calculated at once, along with your Moon sign.
Your birth details
Why the rising sign needs a time and a place
The Earth turns once in 24 hours, and the whole zodiac moves across the horizon with it. A new sign rises roughly every two hours, a new degree every four minutes. That is why the time of day decides your rising sign, not the date.
The place matters because the horizon in Hamburg is not the horizon in Izmir. If you only know your birth time roughly, calculate two times and read both rising signs. The exact time is usually on your full birth certificate or in the hospital record.
How we calculate
The planetary positions come from the same ephemeris as the FalciDilara app. It is verified against data from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and accurate to the arcminute. Longitudes are geocentric and tropical, as is standard in Western astrology.
Your birth time is converted to universal time with the historical time zone rules of your birthplace, including the daylight saving time of that year. The rising sign and midheaven follow from the sidereal time at your place of birth.
The houses are calculated with Placidus, the system most calculators and astrologers use. Only beyond the polar circle, where Placidus does not exist, we use equal houses from the rising sign and say so.
Frequently asked questions
Is the calculation really free?
Yes. Chart, rising sign, houses, planets and aspects are free and need no sign-up. Only the detailed reading by Dilara in the app costs credits, and only once.
How exact does my birth time have to be?
The rising sign moves one degree every four minutes. A quarter of an hour shifts it by about four degrees, so near a sign boundary it changes sign. The Sun, Moon and planets are barely affected.
What if I do not know my birth time?
Then the calculator shows the planets in their signs, but no rising sign and no houses. The time is usually on the full birth certificate, in hospital records or in a baby book.
Can a birth chart tell me about the future?
The chart itself describes what you were born with, and it never changes. To see what is coming, you lay today’s sky over it: those are the transits. The calculator shows the most important ones for today. In the app you see all transits of the next twelve months with their dates for free, plus your solar return chart for the year of life.
Why does another calculator show different houses?
There are several house systems. We use Placidus, like most calculators. If another one is set to Koch, whole sign or equal houses, the house boundaries differ. The planets are in the same sign and degree in every system.
