Sun, Moon and Rising Sign: Meaning of the Big Three
The sun is who you want to be. The moon is what you need. The rising sign is the door they both walk out through.
“I’m a Capricorn, but I’m nothing like one.” I hear that sentence every week. The answer is nearly always the same: you are a Capricorn, and you also have a moon in Gemini and Leo rising. Nobody is made of one sign.
Among the ten planets and twelve houses of a chart there are three points that carry more than all the others put together. Astrologers call them the big three: sun, moon and ascendant, also known as the rising sign. Know these three and you know a person’s will, their feelings and the first impression they make.
I begin every reading with them before I look at a single other planet. You can do the same.
What the big three are
Three points, three speeds. The sun takes a year to go round the zodiac and stays about thirty days in each sign. The moon takes a little over 27 days and changes sign about every two and a half days. The ascendant runs through all twelve in a single day and changes on average every two hours.
That tells you how personal each of them is. You share your sun sign with a twelfth of humanity. You share your moon sign with those born in the same two or three days. You share your rising sign only with those born at almost the same hour in the same part of the world.
Three signs together give 1,728 possible combinations. That explains why two people with the same star sign can be so unlike each other.
The sun: core and will
The sun is what most people call their star sign. It stands for the core: what you are proud of, what you make an effort for, what you want to make of your life. It is less a state than a direction. You become your sun sign, more and more as the years go by.
That is why the description often fits children less well than forty-year-olds. A child with the sun in Capricorn can be playful and anxious. At thirty the same person is the one everybody relies on.
The sun also shows where you want to be seen. In Leo, for what you create. In Virgo, for what you get right. In Sagittarius, for what you have understood. Living against your sun for a long time does not make you ill, but it makes you tired and colourless.
The moon: feelings and needs
The moon is the side you do not put on show. It stands for what you need in order to feel safe, and for what you do when you are not thinking: how you comfort, how you withdraw, what you eat in the evening after a terrible day.
The moon is how you know a person at home. A moon in Taurus needs quiet, good food and things that stay where they are. A moon in Gemini has to talk to find out what it feels. A moon in Scorpio feels everything completely and shows little of it.
In childhood the moon is stronger than the sun, and under pressure it becomes so again. When you turn into someone you hardly know in the middle of an argument, that is your moon speaking. People who feed only their sun sign and let the moon go hungry are capable and unhappy. There is more in the article on the moon sign.
The rising sign: how you meet the world
The ascendant is not a planet but a point: the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It is the way you walk into a room, the effect you have on strangers and how you tackle anything new.
People often call the rising sign a mask. The word misleads, because a mask is false. I prefer front door. It belongs to the house, it is real, but it is not the living room. Someone with Gemini rising comes across as chatty and light, even when a silent Scorpio sun lives behind it.
The ascendant is also the start of the first house, so it fixes all twelve houses. It decides which area of life your sun and moon fall into. For that you need your exact time of birth. How to calculate it and what the twelve ascendants mean is in the article on the rising sign.
How sun, moon and rising sign work together
Picture a house. The sun is the person who owns it, and what they intend to do. The moon is the kitchen, the place where they recover. The ascendant is the door and the hallway: what visitors see first.
The three have the easiest time when they stand in signs of the same element, all in fire or all in water. Then will, feeling and manner pull the same way. Such people seem all of a piece. Their drawback: they often lack the inner contradiction that makes others wiser.
It is harder, and often more interesting, when the three speak different languages. A fire sun wants to set off, an earth moon wants to know first whether the money will last. That is not a fault in the chart. It is a conversation you hold all your life, and over the years you learn which of the two is right when.
Two special cases. If sun and moon are in the same sign, you were born around a new moon: wanting and needing are one, and you are very clear-cut. If they are in opposite signs, you were born around a full moon: you always see both sides and often need another person in order to decide. How to read such angles more closely is covered under aspects.
The sun asks: what do I want? The moon asks: what do I need? The ascendant asks: how do I begin?
Six combinations as examples
No list can describe 1,728 combinations. These six show how the pieces are put together.
Sun in Leo, moon in Pisces
The stage in front, the quiet room behind. This person wants to shine and be generous, and is worn out after every appearance. They need time alone, music, water. Whoever sees only the Leo overlooks how easily they are hurt.
Sun in Virgo, moon in Aries
The sun wants to do it carefully, the moon wants to do it now. The result is someone who works fast and precisely and grows impatient when others dawdle. The anger arrives suddenly and is gone in ten minutes.
Sun in Scorpio, Gemini rising
Curious and witty on the outside, in conversation with everyone. Watchful and private within. Many take this person to be open and realise only years later that they know almost nothing about them.
Sun in Capricorn, moon in Cancer
A full moon child. Capricorn wants to build and achieve, Cancer wants to go home. These people swing between work and family and are serious about both. They settle when their work has something to do with looking after others.
Sun in Libra, Aries rising
The first impression is direct, almost brisk. Behind it stands someone who wants peace and weighs every decision twice. Such people open the argument and are then the first to look for a settlement.
Sun, moon and ascendant in Taurus
Born at a new moon, around sunrise. Here there is no difference between inside and outside. What this person shows is what they are: loyal, slow, sensual, and not to be talked round once they have made up their mind.
How to find your big three
The sun you already know. It is uncertain only if your birthday falls on one of the days when it changes sign, usually between the 19th and the 23rd of a month. Then the year and the time decide.
The moon can be calculated from the date of birth. You need the time only if the moon changed sign on your birthday, which happens on roughly two days out of five.
The ascendant needs date, exact time and place. A rule of thumb for checking: if you were born at sunrise, your rising sign is your sun sign. If you were born at sunset, it is the opposite sign.
Nobody works this out in their head. In the FalciDilara app you enter your birth data once and see all three straight away, and the free horoscope takes them into account. In the full birth chart you then also see which houses they occupy.
Frequently asked questions
Which is more important, sun, moon or rising sign?
None of them alone. The sun shows where you want to go, the moon what feeds you, the ascendant how you set out. In daily life you notice the moon most at home, the sun at work, and the rising sign in anything that is new.
Why don’t I fit my star sign?
Usually because your moon or ascendant is in a completely different sign and is louder in everyday life. A Pisces sun with Capricorn rising comes across as sober and controlled. Read the descriptions of all three signs and the picture comes together.
Can I find my big three without a birth time?
Two out of three, nearly always. Sun and moon can be calculated from the date, except on days when one of them changes sign. The rising sign cannot be determined without a time.
What does it mean if my sun and moon are in the same sign?
Then you were born in the days around a new moon. Will and feeling pull in the same direction, and the qualities of that sign show twice as clearly in you, the strong ones and the tiring ones alike.
Do the big three matter in love?
Yes. When two charts are compared, the first thing to look at is how one person’s sun, moon and ascendant stand to the other’s. The moon shows whether two people can live under one roof. More on that in the article on synastry.
