Moon Sign Meaning: How to Find Yours, All Twelve Explained

Everyone knows your star sign. Your moon sign is known only to the people who have seen you tired, hungry or in love.

When someone tells me they are a typical Leo, I usually ask about the Moon. The Sun shows what you want and how you present yourself. The Moon shows what you need once the door is closed. Quite often those are two different people in one person.

In thirty years I have met many people who do not recognise themselves in their star sign. The quiet Aries woman, the shy Sagittarius. The explanation almost always lies in the moon sign. Here is what it is, how you find it, and what each of the twelve means.

What the moon sign is

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. It is worked out in exactly the same way as your sun sign, only with a different body in the sky.

The difference is speed. The Sun takes a year to pass through all twelve signs and stays about a month in each. That is why your birthday is enough to know your star sign. The Moon makes the whole round in a little over 27 days. It stays only about two and a half days in one sign. Two people born in the same week share a Sun, but often have different Moons.

In astrology the Moon is one of the three most important points of a chart, together with the Sun and the ascendant. How the three work together is the subject of my piece on the big three.

Moon sign calculator: why the birth time matters

To calculate your moon sign you need your date of birth, your place of birth and, if possible, your time of birth. By hand it is tedious, you would need tables of the Moon’s position for every day. The free chart in the app works it out instantly and shows you the Moon with its sign on the wheel.

How exact does the time have to be? On most days it makes no difference to the moon sign, because the Moon stays in one sign all day. But every two and a half days it moves on. On a day like that the clock decides: someone born at nine in the morning may still have the Moon in Cancer, someone who arrived at three in the afternoon already has it in Leo.

The Moon moves about one degree in two hours. A birth time that is right to the half hour is therefore almost always enough. If your time is not on your birth certificate, ask for the full version of the certificate or the hospital record, where it is often noted. And if it truly cannot be found and your birthday was a day of change: read both portraits. Most people recognise themselves in one of the two at once.

What else the chart shows, the houses, planets and aspects, is covered in my piece on the natal chart.

What your moon sign says about you

The Moon stands for everything you do not decide but simply do. How you react before you have thought. What you needed as a child to fall asleep, and what you need today to calm down.

The moon sign answers three questions especially clearly:

  • What feeds you? For one person it is a laid table, for another a free afternoon with no obligations.
  • How do you show feeling? Loudly and at once, late and in a single sentence, or not in words at all but in what you do.
  • What do you do under pressure? The Moon shows the reflex: fight, withdraw, talk, tidy, eat.

In the tradition the Moon also describes the image of the mother and the home you come from. Not the mother as she was, but as you experienced her. Siblings with different Moons often tell two different stories about the same mother.

The twelve moon signs and their meaning

Moon in Aries

With the Moon in Aries, feeling arrives fast and leaves fast. You need movement and the right to say at once what annoys you. What calms you: running, getting your hands on a task, a short row that is forgotten afterwards.

Moon in Taurus

The Moon likes being in Taurus. Tradition calls it exalted there. You need reliability, good food, familiar things around you. You can cope with change if you are given time. What calms you: cooking, soil on your hands, a fixed evening routine.

Moon in Gemini

With the Moon in Gemini you process feelings by talking about them. Silence unsettles you more than any quarrel. What calms you: a phone call, a book, a walk with someone who listens.

Moon in Cancer

In Cancer the Moon is at home. You sense the mood in a room before anyone speaks, and you forget nothing. You need a place that is yours. What calms you: your own kitchen, old photographs, people who stay.

Moon in Leo

With the Moon in Leo you want to be seen, not out of vanity but because for you warmth has to flow both ways. Being overlooked cuts deep. What calms you: honest praise, play, being allowed to be generous.

Moon in Virgo

The Moon in Virgo shows love by being useful. You notice the other person is missing a button and you sew it on. Worry goes to your head and into lists. What calms you: putting things in order, a clear task, a tidy table.

Moon in Libra

With the Moon in Libra you need peace in the room and someone opposite you. You bear ill feeling badly, so you sometimes give in too early. What calms you: a pleasant room, music, a conversation in which both get to speak.

Moon in Scorpio

In Scorpio the Moon has a hard time, says tradition. You feel completely or not at all, and show little of it. You give trust slowly, and then for good. What calms you: the truth, including the uncomfortable kind, and someone who can keep a secret.

Moon in Sagittarius

The Moon in Sagittarius needs room. A tight plan, a small room, a person who clings, and you grow restless. You console yourself with meaning: what was that good for? What calms you: being outdoors, planning a trip, laughing.

Moon in Capricorn

With the Moon in Capricorn you learned early to pull yourself together. Feelings come after the work is done, sometimes years after. You show affection by being there and getting things done. What calms you: a plan, finished work, respect.

Moon in Aquarius

The Moon in Aquarius first looks at feelings from one step back. You need air and friends who do not pin you down. Closeness yes, but not on command. What calms you: time alone, an idea, a conversation about something bigger than your own day.

Moon in Pisces

With the Moon in Pisces you take in what others feel, often without wanting to. The border between your sorrow and theirs is thin. What calms you: water, music, sleep, and a day when nobody wants anything from you.

Moon sign versus sun sign

Your star sign is your sun sign. It describes your will, your direction, what you want to be known for. Your moon sign describes your need, your habit, what you require in order to feel well.

If the Sun and Moon are in the same sign, you were born around a new moon, and wanting and needing pull in the same direction. Such people seem all of a piece, though they sometimes find it hard to see themselves from outside. If the two are in signs that get on badly, say the Sun in Aries and the Moon in Cancer, you know the inner argument between rushing off and staying home. That is not a flaw in the chart. It is the reason you have sympathy for both sides.

A tip for reading horoscopes: many people read the daily text only for their sun sign. For one week, try reading it for your moon sign as well. Where moods and family are concerned, the Moon’s text often fits better. The moon sign, by the way, has nothing to do with the moon phase. One is the Moon’s place in the zodiac, the other its shape. I explain the phases in my piece on the moon phases.

The Moon in relationships

When two people move in together, their Moons get to know each other. The Sun goes on the date. The Moon arrives three months later with the suitcase.

With couples I look first at the elements of the two Moons. Two Moons in the same element understand each other without much explaining: fire with fire, water with water. Fire and air spur each other on, earth and water steady each other. It gets harder with fire and water, or earth and air. One wants to talk when sad, the other wants to be left in peace. Neither means any harm.

Do not ask what star sign he is. Ask what he does when he is tired.

Harder does not mean impossible. It means you have to tell each other what comforts you rather than expect the other to guess. A Scorpio Moon needs you to stay when it goes silent. A Gemini Moon needs you to answer. How two whole charts are laid over each other is described in my piece on synastry, and you will find the signs themselves in the astrology lexicon.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out my moon sign?

You need your date of birth, place of birth and ideally your time of birth. A chart calculator uses these to work out where the Moon stood in the zodiac. In the app this calculation is free and instant.

Can I find my moon sign without a birth time?

Usually, yes. The Moon stays about two and a half days in a sign, so on most birthdays the sign is clear. Only on a day when the Moon changes sign are there two candidates. Then a birth record helps, or reading both portraits.

Which matters more, moon sign or sun sign?

Neither. The sun sign describes where you want to go, the moon sign what you need on the way. For living together and for moods the Moon often tells you more, for work and public manner the Sun.

Is the moon sign the same as the rising sign?

No. The moon sign is the sign the Moon was in. The rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was coming up on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes about every two hours and cannot be found without a birth time.

Does my moon sign change during my life?

No. Your birth Moon stays where it was. What changes is the Moon in the sky, which moves into a new sign every two and a half days and passes through your own moon sign once a month. Many people feel those days as especially tender.
