New Moon in Libra on 10 October 2026: Time and Meaning

A Saturday evening without a Moon. The new moon is in Libra, and Libra's ruler Venus is moving backwards.

On Saturday evening the sky has no Moon in it. Nothing has gone wrong, it is simply the new moon, and this month it falls in Libra, the sign of pairs, agreements and balance. I am fond of these evenings. With nothing to look at overhead, you tend to look inward.

What is happening in the sky

The new moon is exact on 10 October 2026 at 17:50 Central European Summer Time. The U.S. Naval Observatory lists it in its table of Moon phases at 15:50 Universal Time, which is the same instant. By our calculation the Sun and the Moon both stand at 17 degrees of Libra at that moment.

NASA calls the new moon the invisible phase of the Moon. It sits in the same part of the sky as the Sun, rises and sets with the Sun, and turns its night side towards us. The whole cycle repeats about every 29.5 days.

When you can see the Moon again

On the night of the new moon you will see nothing of it. In return there is no moonlight in the way if you want to look at stars. After that, as NASA describes it, a thin sliver appears that grows a little each day and rises a little later each day.

The first quarter follows on 18 October in Capricorn, and the full moon in Taurus on 26 October. All phases with their times are in the moon calendar for October 2026.

What else the sky is doing

Venus has been retrograde in Scorpio since 3 October and stays that way until 14 November. There is more on that in Venus retrograde 2026. Jupiter is in Leo. By our calculation Pluto turns direct again in Aquarius on 16 October. The Sun moves into Scorpio on 23 October, and on 24 October Mercury turns retrograde.

And astrologically?

In astrology a new moon counts as the start of a cycle: what you decide now is meant to take shape by the full moon. Libra, in the old reading, is about the other person, about fairness, and about whether giving and taking are still level.

This time Venus, the ruler of Libra, is retrograde. Tradition reads that as less of a new promise and more of a new conversation about an old one. Jupiter in Leo makes a sextile to this new moon, an angle astrologers consider friendly, and it lends the whole thing some generosity.

If you want to write something down that evening, one sentence will do, about a person with whom you would like things to be even again. How I write such sentences is in new moon wishes.
