Moon Phases and Their Meaning: The Eight Phases Explained

The Moon does the same thing every month, and still hardly anyone looks closely. Eight phases, each with a job of its own.

My grandmother in Izmir never looked at a calendar to know where the Moon was. In the evening she stepped onto the balcony, looked west, and knew. A thin crescent over the sea: time to begin. A fat round moon over the hills: time to harvest and tidy up.

There is nothing secret about this knowledge. It is a little astronomy plus a very old habit of hanging your plans on a rhythm that is bigger than the working week. I will explain both, the sky first and the reading second.

If you only take one thing away, take this: the waxing moon builds, the waning moon releases. Everything else is fine detail.

Why the Moon has phases

The Moon gives no light of its own. The Sun always lights one half of it, just as a lamp always lights one half of a ball. Because the Moon travels around the Earth, we see sometimes none of that bright half, sometimes a sliver, sometimes all of it.

At new moon the Moon stands between the Earth and the Sun. Its lit side faces away from us, and it rises and sets together with the Sun. That is why you cannot see it. At full moon the Earth is between the two. The Moon rises as the Sun goes down and stays in the sky all night.

From one new moon to the next takes about 29.5 days. That is the lunar month, and our calendar months once grew out of it. Divide it into eight phases and each lasts roughly three and a half days. The phases have nothing to do with the Earth’s shadow, which is a common mistake. The Earth’s shadow only touches the Moon during a lunar eclipse.

Waxing moon and waning moon

The first half of the cycle, from new moon to full moon, is the waxing moon. Each evening a little more of it shows. Tradition says that what you begin now grows with it. This is the time for starts, applications, first conversations, for anything that should become more.

The second half, from full moon back to new moon, is the waning moon. Now there is less each night. This is the time for clearing out, cancelling, finishing, breaking a habit, for anything that should shrink or go.

How to tell them apart: in the northern hemisphere the right side is bright when the Moon is waxing and the left side when it is waning. The waxing moon is an evening moon. The waning crescent only shows early in the morning, in the east. So if you see a crescent on your way home from work, it is almost always a young moon.

The eight moon phases and their meaning

New moon

The sky is dark and the Moon invisible. Traditionally this is the moment for the intention, not for the deed. You decide what you want, ideally in writing. I describe how in my piece on new moon wishes.

Waxing crescent

A narrow bow in the evening sky, bright on the right. Now comes the first small step: the phone call, the sign-up, the flowerpot you actually bought. Not the whole project, only the proof that you mean it.

First quarter

The Moon is half lit and stands high in the south in the early evening. This is the phase of first resistance. Something snags, somebody says no. Tradition advises you to decide and act now rather than pull back.

Waxing gibbous

Almost round but not finished. The phase of refining. You adjust, correct, practise. Good for anything that needs patience and precision, hard on the impatient.

Full moon

The Moon stands exactly opposite the Sun and is up all night. What you started now shows whether it holds. Feelings are louder and sleep is often lighter. An evening for looking and celebrating, not for quarrelling.

Waning gibbous

The Moon rises later and loses its roundness on the right. This is when you share and pass on: tell what you have learned, say thank you, give something back. A good phase for conversations meant to clear something up.

Last quarter

A half moon again, this time bright on the left and only in the sky after midnight. The phase of sorting out. What has not proved itself may go: a subscription, a habit, a plan that only lives on paper.

Waning crescent

A thin bow just before sunrise. The quietest phase. Rest, go to bed early, start nothing new. Some call it the balsamic moon. I call it the days when you clear the table before it is laid again.

How to use the moon calendar

A moon calendar gives you the four corner points of each month: new moon, first quarter, full moon, last quarter, each with a time and the zodiac sign the Moon is in. The four phases in between simply lie between them.

This is how I go about it. First I look for the new moon of the month, because it tells me what the month is about. In the moon calendar for October 2026 that is 10 October in Libra, so the theme is balance, partnership, a fair agreement. Then I look at the full moon, here 26 October in Taurus. I have written a separate piece about it: the full moon in Taurus.

In the moon calendar for November 2026 the new moon follows on 9 November in Scorpio and the full moon in Gemini on 24 November. Planning this way, you put beginnings in the first half of the lunar month and endings in the second. You need no more planning than that.

One practical tip: do not write down eight dates, write down two. New moon and full moon. The quarters you will notice by yourself in time, because something snags on them.

The moon phase you were born under

It is not only the sign the Moon stood in at your birth that is read, but also its phase. It describes the attitude with which you approach things.

People born at the new moon act from the gut and only notice afterwards what they have done. The waxing crescent gives people who have to work their way out of something old. Those born at the first quarter need friction and like to build. The waxing gibbous makes improvers who are never quite satisfied.

Full moon people always see both sides and come to know themselves through others. The waning gibbous belongs to teachers and storytellers. Those born at the last quarter question convictions, including their own. And whoever came into the world under the waning crescent often finishes what others began.

You can tell your phase from the distance between the Sun and the Moon in your chart. If both are in the same sign, you were born near a new moon. If they face each other, near a full moon. The free chart in the app shows both positions on the wheel. I explain how to read the drawing in my piece on the natal chart, and what the sign of your Moon says in the one on the moon sign.

Hair, garden, sleep: what there is to it

The questions I hear most often are very down to earth. When to cut hair, when to plant tomatoes, why sleep is poor at full moon.

On hair, custom says: cut with the waxing moon if you want it to grow back stronger, with the waning moon if the cut should last. The garden follows a similar rule. What grows upward is sown with the waxing moon, root vegetables with the waning moon. My grandmother set her beans this way, and she had good beans. Whether that was the Moon or her hands, I cannot tell you.

That is the honest answer: this is handed-down experience, not a measured effect. As for sleep, many people report restless full moon nights, and it is after all the brightest night of the month. A dark room helps more than any interpretation. For me the value of the moon phases lies elsewhere. Every two weeks they give you a reason to stop briefly and ask what you are building and what you can let go.

The Moon gives no orders. It only keeps the beat, the dancing is yours.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a moon phase last?

The whole cycle from new moon to new moon takes about 29.5 days. With eight phases, that is about three and a half days per phase. New moon, the quarters and full moon are strictly speaking single moments, but the reading applies to the day before and the day after.

What is the difference between a waxing and a waning moon?

The waxing moon grows from evening to evening and leads to the full moon. It stands for building and beginning. The waning moon shrinks and leads to the new moon. It stands for letting go, tidying and finishing.

Which moon phase is best for a new beginning?

The new moon for the intention and the waxing crescent for the first step. If you are looking for a fixed date, take one of the first days after the new moon. By the full moon the project should be under way.

Why can I sometimes see the Moon during the day?

Because only at full moon is it exactly opposite the Sun. In every other phase it shares the sky with the Sun for part of the day. The first quarter is easy to see in the afternoon, the last quarter in the morning.

Are the moon phases different in the southern hemisphere?

The phase is the same everywhere on Earth on the same day. Only the picture is mirrored: in the southern hemisphere the left side is bright when the Moon is waxing. Near the equator the crescent lies like a boat.
