The 12 Houses in Astrology: Meaning of Each House

The signs say how something happens. The houses say where in your life it happens: at the kitchen table, in the office or in bed.

Most of the questions people ask me about a chart are house questions. What about love? Money? Work? No sign and no planet answers that on its own. The answer lies where the circle is divided into twelve fields.

The houses are the earthly part of the chart. The zodiac signs are the same for everyone born on a given day. The houses depend on your minute and your place of birth, and they distribute the sky across your life.

That is why there are no houses without a birth time. If you have yours, use it.

What the houses in astrology are

Picture the sky at the moment of your birth as a circle. The line of the horizon divides it into an upper and a lower half: what was visible and what stood below the earth. A second line, from the highest point to the lowest, divides it into east and west. Those four quarters are divided again to make twelve fields. These are the houses.

They are counted anticlockwise, starting on the left at the ascendant. The first house lies just below the eastern horizon, the seventh opposite it just above the western horizon, the tenth at the top, the fourth at the bottom. Because the earth turns, every planet passes through all twelve houses in the course of a day. Hence the importance of the clock.

In interpretation, the formula I described for the birth chart applies: the planet says what, the sign says how, the house says where.

The twelve houses and their meaning

Each house stands for an area of life. The order tells a story: from the single person in the first house to what is larger than them in the twelfth.

1st house: self

Your manner, your body, the first impression. Everything starts here. Planets in the first house show in you before you have said a word.

2nd house: possessions

Money you earn yourself, things that belong to you, and the sense of being worth something. Also talents that can be turned into bread.

3rd house: nearness and language

Siblings, neighbours, short journeys, school, messages, everyday talking and writing. How you learn and how you explain.

4th house: roots

Home, the family you come from and the one you found. The place you withdraw to. In many systems its cusp is the lowest point of the chart, the IC.

5th house: joy

Falling in love, play, children, everything you create for the pleasure of it. The stage and the party. This is where you are when nobody is asking anything of you.

6th house: daily life

Work as an activity, habits, duties, care of the body, pets too. How you order your day and make yourself useful to others.

7th house: the other

Marriage, committed partnership, business partners, open opponents as well. It begins at the descendant and shows what you look for in the person facing you.

8th house: bonds and change

Shared money, inheritance, debts, sexuality, crises you come out of changed. Whatever you do not own alone. Not a house of misfortune but of depth.

9th house: distance

Long journeys, study, faith, a view of the world, foreign countries and languages. Everything that widens the horizon.

10th house: career and reputation

Vocation, standing in the world, what you are known for. Also how you deal with authority. The most visible field in the whole circle.

11th house: friends

Circle of friends, groups, clubs, shared aims, hopes for the future. The people you choose.

12th house: stillness

Retreat, dreams, what is hidden, what you settle alone with yourself. Also devotion and places of seclusion. Planets here work quietly and need time to themselves.

The four angles

Four points in the circle carry more than all the others. They come from the horizon and the meridian, and a planet close to one of them speaks twice as loudly.

Ascendant (AC)Eastern horizon: you and your manner
ICBottom of the sky: origins and home
Descendant (DC)Western horizon: the other, partnership
Midheaven (MC)Highest point: career and direction

Ascendant and descendant form the horizontal axis, the axis of encounter: I and you. IC and midheaven form the vertical axis: where I come from and where I am going. The IC, Latin imum coeli, is the lowest point beneath the earth. The midheaven, medium coeli, is the point of the zodiac that stood highest when you were born.

The sign on your midheaven often says more about your work than your sun sign does. A midheaven in Virgo looks for work where precision matters. One in Sagittarius wants to teach, travel or persuade.

Angular, succedent and cadent houses

The twelve houses are divided into three groups of four. The division is old and helps in judging how strong a planet is.

Angular houses are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth. They begin at the angles. This is where things are done. Planets in angular houses show plainly in a life, and other people notice them.

Succedent houses are the second, fifth, eighth and eleventh. They follow the angular ones and secure what was begun there: possessions, joy, shared resources, friendships. Planets here build up and hold on.

Cadent houses are the third, sixth, ninth and twelfth. The word means falling and sounds like weakness, but something else is meant. This is where things are learned, digested, prepared. Planets in cadent houses work through thought and adjustment, less through visible action.

The threefold division resembles that of the signs into cardinal, fixed and mutable, described in the article on elements and modalities. A person with many planets in angular houses gets talked about. One with many in cadent houses usually knows more than they show.

Empty houses, planets and the sign on the cusp

Empty houses are normal. Ten planets are spread over twelve houses, and usually several share one. Almost everyone has four, five or six empty houses. An empty seventh house does not mean you stay alone. It means partnership is not a field in which something is constantly rubbing.

You read an empty house through the sign on its cusp. The cusp is the line where a house begins. If Cancer is there, the house has the colouring of Cancer, and you look at where the moon is, because the moon rules Cancer. In this way every empty house leads to a planet in another.

A planet in a house weighs more than the sign on the cusp. The sign describes the mood of the room. The planet is someone who lives in it. Saturn in the second house makes a person careful with money whatever sign is on the cusp. The sign then tells you what form that care takes.

Three or more planets in one house make a centre of gravity. That area of life will not leave you alone, for better and for the more demanding. How those planets stand to one another is shown by the aspects.

An empty house is a quiet room, not a locked one.

House systems: equal houses and Placidus

Astrologers have disagreed for centuries about how to divide the circle into twelve. There are more than a dozen methods.

The FalciDilara app uses equal houses from the ascendant: every house is exactly 30 degrees wide, and the first begins on the degree of your ascendant. It is one of the oldest methods, it is clear, and it works anywhere on earth. In it the midheaven is a point of its own and does not have to fall on the cusp of the tenth house. It can lie in the ninth, tenth or eleventh.

The other widely used system is Placidus. It divides by time instead of space, so the houses come out different sizes, and the midheaven is always the cusp of the tenth. If you had your chart drawn elsewhere with Placidus, a planet may sit in a different house there than with equal houses. That is not a calculation error. The signs, the degrees and the aspects are the same in every system.

If a planet is close to a house boundary, read both houses. You usually see quickly where it is at home in you.

Frequently asked questions

What does an empty house mean in a birth chart?

That no planet stands in that area of life, nothing more. The area is still there. You read it through the sign on the house cusp and through the planet that rules that sign.

Which house stands for love?

Two above all. The fifth house is falling in love, flirting, delight in another person. The seventh house is commitment and marriage. The eighth joins in where closeness, trust and shared money are concerned.

Which house is for career and money?

The tenth house shows vocation and standing, the sixth daily work, the second the money you earn yourself. If you want to know how you work, look at the sixth. If you want to know where you are heading, look at the tenth.

Can I find my houses without a birth time?

No. The houses hang on the ascendant, and that shifts by a degree every four minutes. Without a time you are left with signs and aspects, which is still a great deal.

Why is my planet in a different house in another app?

Nearly always because of the house system. Equal houses and Placidus draw the boundaries in different places. Planets close to a boundary change house easily; their sign and degree do not change.
