Chinese Zodiac Animals by Year: Find Your Sign

Twelve animals, five elements, and a new year that never falls on 1 January. How to find your animal without being a year off.

By the harbour in Izmir there was an old tea merchant who asked every customer for their year of birth. Not the month, only the year. Then he nodded and said: Horse, of course, you cannot stand still. My grandmother laughed about it, but she remembered every animal he named.

The Chinese zodiac is one of the oldest ways of describing people, and it counts quite differently from ours. No band of constellations, but a circle of twelve years, each with an animal.

Most people know their animal. Many know the wrong one. So I will begin with the counting.

How to find your Chinese zodiac sign

Each Chinese year belongs to one of twelve animals, in a fixed order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. After twelve years the circle starts again. Someone born in 2014 has the same animal as someone born in 2002, 1990 or 1978.

The catch: the Chinese year does not begin on 1 January. It begins at Chinese New Year, which follows the Moon. It falls on a different day each year, somewhere between 21 January and 20 February.

If you were born in March or later, simply read your animal off your birth year. If you were born in January or the first weeks of February, you have to check when New Year fell in your year. If your birthday came before it, you still belong to the animal of the previous year.

Two examples. Born on 20 January 1990: New Year fell on 27 January that year, so you are still a Snake and not a Horse. Born on 1 February 2000: New Year was on 5 February, so you are a Rabbit and not a Dragon.

The twelve animals and their traits

Legend has it that the Jade Emperor invited all the animals to a race, and the first twelve were each given a year. The Rat rode on the Ox’s back and jumped off just before the finish. That is how the order came about. Here is what tradition says of each:

Rat

1984, 1996, 2008, 2020. Clever, quick, resourceful. The Rat spots an opening before others have entered the room, and can get by on little. Its shadow: restlessness, and a habit of calculating everything, affection included.

Ox

1985, 1997, 2009, 2021. Patient, hardworking, dependable. The Ox pulls the plough until the field is done. You can rely on its word. Its shadow: stubbornness, and a long memory for slights.

Tiger

1986, 1998, 2010, 2022. Brave, passionate, protective. The Tiger stands in front of the weaker ones and does not ask what it costs. Its shadow: it acts before thinking and cannot bear orders.

Rabbit

1987, 1999, 2011, 2023. Gentle, tactful, with fine taste. The Rabbit makes peace in a room without anyone noticing how. Its shadow: it avoids a quarrel for so long that nothing is left to settle.

Dragon

1988, 2000, 2012, 2024. The only mythical creature in the circle, and the animal counted luckiest in China. Proud, generous, full of ideas. Its shadow: the Dragon expects admiration and forgives slowly when it does not come.

Snake

1989, 2001, 2013, 2025. Wise, discreet, strongly intuitive. The Snake watches for a long time and acts once. It is known as the thinker’s animal. Its shadow: suspicion and jealousy, carried in silence.

Horse

1990, 2002, 2014, 2026. Free, lively, sociable, and a hard worker too. The Horse needs open space and movement, and its eagerness is catching. Its shadow: impatience. Whatever fences it in, it leaves.

Goat

1991, 2003, 2015, 2027. Mild, artistic, kind. The Goat, called Sheep in some translations, has a feeling for beauty and for other people’s moods. Its shadow: it worries a great deal and likes to lean on someone stronger.

Monkey

1992, 2004, 2016, 2028. Inventive, witty, curious. The Monkey solves a problem by a route nobody saw. Its shadow: it likes to trick, and sometimes tricks itself.

Rooster

1993, 2005, 2017, 2029. Observant, punctual, outspoken. The Rooster sees every detail and says what it sees. Its shadow: pride, and a sharp tongue.

Dog

1994, 2006, 2018, 2030. Loyal, honest, fair. The Dog stands by its people and senses injustice at once. Its shadow: it expects the worst and worries in advance.

Pig

1995, 2007, 2019, 2031. Big-hearted, sincere, fond of life. The Pig treats itself and others and holds no grudges. Its shadow: it believes too easily what it is told.

For all these years the warning above applies: January and early February usually still belong to the year before.

The five elements

The animal comes with an element. Chinese teaching knows five: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. They have little to do with the four elements of western astrology. How the western ones work is covered in the article on fire, earth, air and water.

The five elements form a cycle. Wood feeds Fire, Fire leaves Earth, Earth holds Metal, Metal gathers Water, Water lets Wood grow. Each element governs two years in a row, then the next takes over. You can tell yours from the last digit of your Chinese birth year:

  • 0 or 1: Metal. Clear, determined, firm in principle.
  • 2 or 3: Water. Flexible, sensitive, a good listener.
  • 4 or 5: Wood. Growing, generous, turned to the future.
  • 6 or 7: Fire. Warm, rousing, quick to catch.
  • 8 or 9: Earth. Calm, practical, balancing.

Twelve animals times five elements makes sixty combinations. Only after sixty years does the same animal return with the same element. That is why the sixtieth birthday is celebrated so warmly in China: the circle has been walked once in full.

So a Horse born in 1990 is a Metal Horse, one from 2002 a Water Horse, one from 2014 a Wood Horse. The same animal in a different key.

Chinese zodiac 2026: Year of the Fire Horse

Since Chinese New Year on 17 February 2026 we have been in the Year of the Horse, and its element is Fire. The last Fire Horse year was 1966. The next comes in 2086.

Fire on Horse is movement twice over. Tradition describes such years as fast, loud and quick to decide. What has long been prepared starts rolling. What was built only on patience grows impatient. Departures, moves, journeys, anything that needs courage is counted as favoured. Anything that needs staying power and sitting still is counted as tricky.

The Fire Horse also has a difficult reputation, and I will not hide it. In Japan a superstition long held that women born in this year were too headstrong for marriage. In 1966 noticeably fewer children were born there because of it. I think nothing of that belief. A girl with a will of her own is no misfortune, and a birth year decides nobody.

For people born in a Horse year themselves, 2026 counts as their own year. Tradition does not see your own year as a lucky one, but as one in which to move a little more carefully. Many wear something red. Tiger and Dog are counted as the Horse’s good allies, the Rat as its opposite.

2027: Year of the Fire Goat

The Horse year ends on 5 February 2027. On 6 February 2027 the Year of the Goat begins, again with the element Fire. Children born in January 2027 are therefore still Horses.

Chinese New Year always falls on a new moon, which you can find in the moon calendar for February 2027.

After the gallop comes the pasture. The Goat stands for gentleness, art, family and care, and Fire gives it more courage than it usually shows. Tradition describes Goat years as a time for mending what the Horse knocked over in passing. Reconciliations, small improvements to the home, beautiful things, shared meals. Rabbit and Pig are counted as the Goat’s good allies, the Ox as its opposite.

How it differs from western astrology

The two systems do not contradict each other. They measure different things.

  • Year, not month. Your western sign depends on day and month, your Chinese animal on the year. You share it with everyone born in your year.
  • Moon, not Sun. The western sign follows the Sun’s path through the zodiac. The Chinese year begins with a new moon.
  • Five elements, not four. Wood and Metal do not exist in the west, and Air does not exist in China.
  • Not a sky in the strict sense. The twelve animals are not constellations. They are a way of counting time that is also applied to months, days and hours. A full Chinese reading therefore knows four animals per person, not one.
  • What is missing. Rising sign, houses and aspects exist only in the western birth chart.

I read the two side by side. The western chart, with Sun, Moon and rising sign, tells me how a person is built. The Chinese animal tells me what rhythm their birth year runs to. Both are tradition and interpretation, not proof. The western signs are in the astrology lexicon.

The animal of your year is the horse you ride. Where you ride it is up to you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out my Chinese zodiac sign?

Take your birth year and read off the animal. If you were born in January or February, check the date of Chinese New Year in your birth year. If your birthday falls before it, the animal of the previous year applies.

What Chinese zodiac year is 2026?

The Horse, with the element Fire. The Year of the Fire Horse began on 17 February 2026 and ends on 5 February 2027. The Year of the Fire Goat follows.

I was born in January. Which animal am I?

Almost always the animal of the year before, because Chinese New Year never falls earlier than 21 January. Anyone born between 21 January and 20 February has to look up the exact New Year date of their year.

Is it Goat or Sheep, Ox or Buffalo?

Both are right. The Chinese word covers the whole family of animals in each case, and translations vary. In Vietnam the Rabbit’s place is even taken by the Cat.

Which Chinese zodiac signs are compatible?

Tradition knows four groups of three: Rat, Dragon, Monkey. Ox, Snake, Rooster. Tiger, Horse, Dog. Rabbit, Goat, Pig. Animals that face each other across the circle, such as Rat and Horse, count as tense pairs. As with western zodiac compatibility, that is a first glance and not a verdict.
