Zodiac Elements and Modalities: Fire, Earth, Air, Water

Four elements, three modalities, twelve signs. Understand this small grid and you can already half read a chart.

My grandmother had no technical words. When a neighbour talked about a daughter who could never sit still, she said: that child has fire in her belly, give her something to do. And of a quiet boy who felt everything: he is made of water, do not shout at him.

That is how old this way of sorting is. Long before anyone calculated aspects, people were described by four elements. Astrology turned it into a grid: four elements, three modalities, and at each crossing sits exactly one zodiac sign.

I will show you which sign belongs where, what an element gives and what it lacks, and how to count them in your own chart.

The four elements: fire, earth, air, water

Each element holds three signs. They sit four signs apart around the zodiac and form a triangle, which is why they understand each other so easily.

Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Fire wants. It gives courage, enthusiasm, the first step. A fire person walks in and the room gets warmer. Aries lights it, Leo radiates, Sagittarius carries the torch onwards. What fire lacks: patience, listening, the wish to finish what was started. Fire without fuel burns out.

Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Earth builds. It gives reliability, a sense of what is possible, and hands that know how to do things. Taurus keeps, Virgo improves, Capricorn constructs. What earth lacks: lightness, and the trust that unplanned things can turn out well. Too much earth grows heavy and says no to anything new before it has looked.

Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Air connects. It gives language, curiosity, the view from above. Gemini asks, Libra mediates, Aquarius thinks for everyone. What air lacks: grounding, and contact with its own gut. Air can explain a feeling for so long that it stops feeling it.

Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Water feels. It gives compassion, memory, a sense for what is left unsaid. Cancer shelters, Scorpio goes deep, Pisces dissolves boundaries. What water lacks: distance. Water takes the shape of any vessel and sometimes no longer knows which mood is its own.

The elements pair up as relatives. Fire and air are the mobile ones, turned outwards. Earth and water are the gathering ones, turned inwards. The classic answer to which zodiac signs are compatible rests on this.

The three modalities: cardinal, fixed, mutable

The element says what a sign is made of. The modality says how it moves. In the northern hemisphere it follows the seasons: each season has a beginning, a middle and an end.

Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn

The cardinal signs open the seasons. Spring begins with Aries, summer with Cancer, autumn with Libra, winter with Capricorn. Cardinal people start things. They take the initiative, each in their own element: Aries with an action, Cancer with care, Libra with a conversation, Capricorn with a plan. Their weak spot is staying the course.

Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius

The fixed signs stand in the middle of the season, when the weather is most settled. Fixed people hold. They stay when others have long since left, and what they love they love for a long time. Their weakness is the other side of that strength: they dislike changing direction, even when the road ends at a wall.

Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces

The mutable signs stand at the end of the season, when the next one is already in the air. Mutable people adapt. They mediate, translate, find a third way. Their weakness: whoever adjusts to every situation loses their own line easily and starts many things others have to finish.

Two signs of the same modality but different elements stand in square or opposition. Both go about things in the same way and so get in each other’s way. More on that in the article on aspects.

Element times modality: twelve signs, each unique

Four elements times three modalities makes twelve boxes, and no box is filled twice. Picture a table with four rows and three columns. I will read it to you row by row.

  • Fire. Cardinal fire is Aries: the spark that jumps. Fixed fire is Leo: the hearth that burns all evening. Mutable fire is Sagittarius: the wildfire that travels from place to place.
  • Earth. Cardinal earth is Capricorn: the mountain that wants climbing. Fixed earth is Taurus: the field that yields every year. Mutable earth is Virgo: the garden where something is always being weeded and moved.
  • Air. Cardinal air is Libra: the wind that brings two sides together. Fixed air is Aquarius: the clear, still air of high places, where an idea holds for years. Mutable air is Gemini: the breeze that keeps turning.
  • Water. Cardinal water is Cancer: the spring that feeds something. Fixed water is Scorpio: the deep lake whose bottom you cannot see. Mutable water is Pisces: the sea that knows no shore.

That is why Leo and Aries are both fiery and still so different. Aries starts ten things, Leo stays with one and makes it grand. And it is why Taurus and Scorpio understand each other in an odd way, though earth and water are not the same: both are fixed, neither lets go.

When an element is missing from your chart

Your zodiac sign is only the Sun. Your birth chart holds ten planets spread over several signs. Most people have one element well stocked and one thin or empty. The missing one is often more telling than the strong one.

No fire. You take a long time to get going and wonder whether you are allowed. You often look for people who sweep you along. What helps: starting small before you feel ready.

No earth. Money, appointments, the body, anything tangible takes effort. You have ideas and feelings, but the tax return has been sitting there since March. What helps: fixed habits, and something you do with your hands.

No air. You feel a lot and do a lot, but stepping back is hard. In an argument the right words arrive the next day. What helps: writing before speaking, and asking someone who looks from outside.

No water. You seem composed, sometimes cool, and notice late that something has hurt you. What helps: music, dreams, time near water. And people who ask how you are and wait for the answer.

Missing does not mean lacking for ever. I often see people become ambitious in exactly the missing element, or choose partners who have plenty of it. The Moon matters too: a moon sign in an otherwise empty element weighs more than the number suggests.

How to count the elements in your chart

You need your calculated chart, ideally with a birth time. In the app the calculation is free and instant. Then go like this:

  1. Make a list. Write down the ten planets from Sun to Pluto plus the ascendant, each with the sign it stands in.
  2. Add the element. Put the element after each sign. Then count: how many fire, how many earth, how many air, how many water.
  3. Weigh them. I count Sun, Moon and ascendant twice, because the big three shape you most. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in one sign for years and belong to your whole age group. Those I count as half.
  4. Same for modalities. The same list once more, this time with cardinal, fixed, mutable.
  5. Read it. An element with four points or more is your home. One with zero or one point is your field of learning.

An example: Sun and Mercury in Virgo, Moon in Taurus, Capricorn rising, Venus in Leo, Mars in Gemini. That is a great deal of earth, a little fire and air, and no water among the personal planets. Such a person is dependable and capable, and probably seldom says what they feel.

What the count does not tell you

Counting is a beginning, not a verdict. Three things are often overlooked.

First, houses. A planet in a water sign can sit in a very earthy area of life, and the other way round. Second, a single planet in an element is not weak. Often it is the loudest in the whole chart, because it carries an entire task alone. Third, elements describe a temperament, not a fate. The system is tradition, not measurement. It is good for understanding yourself more kindly, not for pinning yourself or anyone else down.

The wind does not ask the fire why it burns. It blows, and both grow.

All signs with their element, modality and ruler are in the astrology lexicon.

Frequently asked questions

Which zodiac sign belongs to which element?

Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Around the zodiac the order always repeats: fire, earth, air, water.

What do cardinal, fixed and mutable mean?

They are the three modalities, also called qualities. Cardinal signs begin, fixed signs hold, mutable signs adapt. Each modality contains four signs, one from every element.

Why is Aquarius an air sign and not a water sign?

The name misleads. Aquarius pours water, but it is the bearer, not the water. It belongs to air because its themes are thought, community and ideas rather than feeling.

Is it bad to have a missing element in my chart?

No. Nearly every chart has a weak element. It shows what does not come to you by itself and what you work towards over a lifetime, often with more awareness than people who were simply handed it.

Which elements are compatible?

By tradition fire with air and earth with water, and each element with itself. That is a first pointer for two sun signs. It does not decide a relationship.
