Love Symbols in Coffee Cup Reading: Ring, Heart, Two Paths
Most cups pushed across the table to me carry the same silent question. The cup rarely answers it with yes or no, but almost always with a picture.
When someone pushes a cup towards me and says nothing, I usually know what it is about. People ask about money out loud. About love they stay silent and watch my hands.
My grandmother read questions of love more slowly than any others. She said there is no subject in which you see what you want to see so quickly. A round blot becomes a ring, a drop becomes a heart. So here more than anywhere the rule holds: first the place, then the shape, then the neighbours.
This piece goes through the signs that speak of love in a cup, from first affection to a wedding, including the ones many people are afraid of. The cup decides nothing for you. It shows how a matter stands at this moment.
Where love sits in the cup
Hold the cup with the handle towards you. The zones are the same as for any other question, and they are set out in detail in the zones of the cup. For love, I read them like this.
If you live in a relationship, the important signs nearly always sit close to the handle. If you are alone and hoping for someone, you find them on the right wall or on the far side. And if you are still attached to someone from before, you find that person at the bottom. That alone answers many questions before a single symbol has been read.
Heart, ring and pairs of birds
These are the signs everyone looks for. They turn up less often than people hope, which is exactly why they count when they are clear.
Heart
Affection that is meant. A bright heart with clean edges by the handle is love in your own home. On the right wall near the rim, someone shows themselves soon. A small heart far from the handle is a feeling the other person is still keeping to themselves. A dark heart is worry about someone, not a lack of love.
Two hearts
Mutual feeling. Close together, two people are in agreement. With a dark stripe between them, something stands between you that can be talked through. If one heart is clearly bigger, one of you is loving more loudly than the other just now.
Ring
A promise. Closed and bright it is a commitment, and by the handle a bond that concerns your home. An open ring is a promise not yet spoken. Do not mistake every round blot for one: a ring has a pale centre.
Pair of birds
Two birds turned towards each other count as one of the loveliest signs of love: two people who talk and want to reach each other. Flying the same way, you share a goal. Flying apart, you are living past each other at the moment.
Flower
An attention, a compliment, a love at its beginning. A single flower by the handle means someone thinks of you tenderly. A rose with recognisable petals is open courtship.
Butterfly
A flirtation. Light, lovely, and not meant for long. Beside a ring or a house, something light may become something firm. On its own it is a pleasure for the moment.
Animals say a good deal about a person’s nature in questions of love. I describe swan, dove and deer in the piece on animals in the coffee grounds.
Wedding symbols in the coffee cup
A single ring is not yet a wedding. In the old way of reading, the cup needs several signs standing together for that.
Two rings
Two rings linked or lying side by side are the clearest sign of an engagement or marriage. Near the rim the step is drawing close, in the middle of the wall it still needs weeks or months.
Crown
In Turkish tradition the crown also stands for the bride’s headdress. Beside a ring or a female figure it is a wedding. Alone it is recognition.
Figure with a veil
A figure with a pale area falling from its head is read as a bride. By the handle it concerns you or your household, further away a wedding among friends to which you will be invited.
Bouquet
Many flowers close together are a celebration. With a ring beside them, it is the celebration of a promise.
Laid table and many figures
A table or a group of people near the rim is a celebration in the near future. It does not say whose. Check whether it stands by the handle.
House with two figures
A clear house with a roof, with two figures in front of it or inside: a shared household. For many couples that is the real question, more important than the party.
When two or three of these signs stand in the same zone, I speak of a wedding. When only one is there, I speak of what it means by itself. I have that restraint from my grandmother. She never announced a marriage to a young woman just because there was a squiggle near the rim.
Letters, initials and faces
The most common request: tell me who it is. The cup gives no names, but sometimes a first letter.
Letters are small, often no bigger than a fingernail, and they seldom stand upright. Take seriously only those you recognise at once. A letter counts for love when it stands next to a heart, a ring, a bird or a face. Alone on the wall it may just as well be a colleague or a place.
Where the letter stands tells you how close this person is. By the handle they are already part of your life. Opposite the handle you hardly know them, or not yet at all. At the bottom it is a name from the past. If you often dream of someone from before, there is more in the piece on dreaming about an ex.
Faces in profile show where someone is looking inwardly. If the face looks to the handle, they are turned towards you. If it looks away, their mind is elsewhere. Two faces looking at each other are a conversation that is due. Back to back they are a silence that either of you can break.
Numbers beside a sign of love are time: near the rim days, in the middle weeks, at the bottom months.
Two paths and a third person
A path that divides is a decision in questions of love. Between two people, between staying and going, between one city and another. Look at which arm is paler and straighter. Look too at which one leads to the handle: that path takes you back home, to what you know.
Signs of a third person I read with special care, because they cause the most unrest.
Three figures
Two figures close together and a third just behind or between them. It can be another love. Far more often it is a mother, a friend or a former partner whose opinion has a say in the relationship.
Cat beside a heart
Someone acts friendly and does not quite mean it. By the handle it is someone in your circle who interferes.
Snake between two signs
A dishonesty between you. It does not say who it comes from, and it need not be infidelity. Often it is something left unsaid: debts, an old contact, a worry.
Eye
Envy from outside. Someone begrudges you your happiness. In Turkey this is called nazar. The eye does not separate. It only advises you not to tell everyone everything.
Second ring, smaller and darker
An old bond not fully undone, yours or the other person’s. At the bottom it is the past and may stay there.
None of these signs is proof. A cup does not replace a conversation. If a suspicion is troubling you, the cup is the reason to ask, not the answer.
Signs of separation, read gently
People ask me about signs of separation while holding their breath. So the most important thing first: the cup shows a state, not a verdict. It shows that something no longer holds, and leaves open what you do about it.
A broken or open ring is a promise that is wobbling. Near the rim, a conversation that clears things up is coming. At the bottom it is an old disappointment that still has an effect.
A heart with a dark line running through it is a crack, a hurt. If the heart itself stays bright, the affection is still there.
A knife or scissors is a cut, often a frank word long overdue. If the blade points away from the handle, you are the one who says it.
Two paths that run apart and do not meet again are two lives taking different directions. If they come together higher up, it is a pause.
A ship or a bird on the left wall, heading away from the handle, is a person leaving. If the head is turned back, the goodbye is not finished.
A closed door at the bottom is something that is over and may stay over. In many cups that is a relief.
What I never do is tell a woman that her husband is leaving her. I say what I see. A promise is wobbling, something is unspoken, and here, on the right wall, is a bright path. In almost every cup with a heavy sign there is also a way out.
The cup shows you where it hurts. What you do about it is not written in the coffee.
What the saucer says about a love wish
If you turned the cup with a question of the heart, the saucer belongs to that question. Read it first, as described in the guide on how to read Turkish coffee grounds.
One large, calm patch means the wish stands well. Two patches touching are two people finding each other. Two patches with a pale gap between them are two who have not yet found each other. A pale channel between them is a road one of the two has to walk.
Many small drops I read as impatience. The wish is not lost, but you are asking it too often. A heart or a letter on the saucer belongs directly to the question and weighs more than the same sign inside the cup.
And there is the old custom with the ring. Someone with a question of love lays their own ring on the base of the upturned cup while it cools. It is a gesture, not magic, but it helps you stay with one question.
The basic meanings of all the signs are in the coffee cup reading symbols. If you would sooner put the question to the cards, the five card tarot love spread is the counterpart. And for two birth dates side by side there is synastry.
Frequently asked questions
Does a ring in the coffee cup always mean marriage?
No. A ring is first of all a promise or a commitment, which can also be a contract or a firm arrangement. I speak of a wedding only when there are two rings, or further signs such as a crown, a bouquet or a house with two figures.
What does a heart mean in coffee cup reading?
Affection, and depending on how bright it is, also worry about someone. By the handle it is love in your own home, on the right wall love that is coming, at the bottom someone from before. On the saucer it is tied directly to your wish.
Can the cup tell me whether he will come back?
It can show whether someone is moving towards you: a face, a bird or a horse looking to the handle. It cannot promise that he stays, and it says nothing about whether that would be good for you. That is your question, not the cup’s.
What does a letter next to a heart mean?
The first letter of a name linked to this affection. Count it only if you recognise it at once. Remember too that the same shape reads differently in Latin, Turkish or Arabic script.
Is a broken heart in the cup a bad sign?
It is an honest sign. It shows a hurt that already exists and does not announce a new one. Look at what stands beside it: a bright path, a key or a bird shows how things go on.
