Zodiac Sign Compatibility: What Synastry Really Compares
Sun sign against sun sign is only the first glance. Here is what I look at next when two people sit down in front of me.
I hear this question more than any other: I am a Taurus, he is a Leo, does that work? Usually the cup is still warm on the table, and the person asking has already read the answer online three times, a different one each time.
My grandmother in Izmir never answered that with yes or no. She asked back: how do you two argue, and who makes the tea afterwards? That is a compatibility reading in one sentence. It does not ask whether two people fit. It asks what they do with each other.
So here are both: the quick answer by zodiac sign, and what a real synastry chart compares.
Why sun signs are only the first glance
Your zodiac sign is the sign the Sun stood in when you were born. It describes your core, your will, what gets you out of bed. That is a lot, but it is one planet out of ten.
Two people with the same sun sign can behave completely differently in love, because their Moon, their Venus and their rising sign sit elsewhere. I know Scorpios who love gently and patiently because their Venus is in Libra, and Libras as jealous as any textbook Scorpio.
Comparing Sun to Sun tells you whether your basic directions sit easily together. It does not tell you what daily life feels like. Take it for what it is: an honest first look, like the one you give a cup before you turn it. For more you need the big three of both people: Sun, Moon and rising sign.
Which elements get along
The twelve signs belong to four elements, and the elements are the oldest answer to the question of zodiac sign compatibility. If they are new to you, start with elements and modalities.
Fire with air. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius need someone to fan the flame. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius do exactly that: they bring ideas, talk, movement. Air gives fire room, fire gives air a direction. The risk is that both forget dinner, the bills and sleep.
Earth with water. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn give something to lean on. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces give feeling. Water makes earth fertile, earth gives water a shore. The risk here is heaviness: two people settle in so comfortably that nobody opens a window.
The same element. Two fire signs, two water signs: you understand each other without explaining. This is the trine, the softest angle in the zodiac, and it feels like coming home. But both lack the same thing. Two air signs can discuss moving house for a year without packing one box.
Fire with water, earth with air. These mixes count as the harder ones. Water can put fire out, fire can bring water to the boil. Earth finds air unreliable, air finds earth slow. Hard does not mean impossible, and this is where it gets interesting.
Tense pairs: why square signs attract
Signs that sit three signs apart are in square. Aries and Cancer. Taurus and Leo. Gemini and Virgo. They share a modality, so they want things in the same manner, but through different elements. Two cardinal signs both want to lead. Two fixed signs both want to be right.
And still, a striking number of the couples who come to me form exactly such a square. The reason is simple: friction makes warmth. Someone who never challenges you is pleasant, but you do not grow beside them. A square makes sure you never become indifferent to each other.
Then there is the opposition, the sign directly across: Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Cancer and Capricorn. Opposite signs are not enemies. They are two ends of one axis, and often one has precisely what the other lacks. That explains the strong pull at the start, and the argument in year three when the missing thing begins to grate.
What these angles are called and how each one works is covered in the piece on aspects in the birth chart.
What a real synastry chart compares
Synastry means laying two birth charts on top of each other and seeing which planet of one person touches which planet of the other. It needs date, time and place of birth for both. How a chart is built is explained in birth chart basics.
These are the comparisons I look at first:
- Your Moon with their Moon. The Moon shows what a person needs to feel safe. Two Moons that understand each other make a home where silence is comfortable. Two Moons in square argue over small things: when to eat, how loud the television is. More on this in the article on the moon sign.
- Venus and Mars. Venus shows what someone finds beautiful and how they want to be loved. Mars shows how someone desires and fights. If your Venus is in the same sign as their Mars, attraction is there before anyone has spoken.
- The rising signs. The ascendant is the door through which you meet a person. When one person’s Sun or Moon falls on the other’s ascendant, you feel seen at once.
- Sun with Moon. The old signature of marriage: one person’s Sun in the sign of the other’s Moon. One is what the other needs.
- Saturn. Easily overlooked. Saturn on the other person’s personal planets brings duration, duty, sometimes weight. Long relationships nearly always have a strong Saturn.
No single comparison decides anything. Only when a theme repeats three times do I take it seriously. It is the same in the cup: one bird is a bird, three birds are a message.
All twelve signs at a glance
Here is the short list by sun sign. “Flows” means trine and sextile, “rubs” means square. I name the opposite sign separately, because it can do both at once.
Aries
Aries flows with Leo and Sagittarius, who share the pace, and with Gemini and Aquarius, who admire it. It rubs against Cancer and Capricorn, who want to slow it down. Libra, across the wheel, shows Aries that there is a second person in the room.
Taurus
Taurus flows with Virgo and Capricorn and feels sheltered with Cancer and Pisces. Leo and Aquarius test its stubbornness. Scorpio opposite wants to go deeper than Taurus finds comfortable, and holds on to it for exactly that reason.
Gemini
Gemini flows with Libra and Aquarius, and with Aries and Leo, who give it a stage. Virgo and Pisces find it restless. Sagittarius opposite asks what all that knowledge is actually for.
Cancer
Cancer flows with Scorpio and Pisces and is well looked after by Taurus and Virgo. With Aries and Libra the rub is about who gives way. Capricorn opposite offers the wall behind which Cancer is allowed to be soft.
Leo
Leo flows with Aries and Sagittarius, and finds audience and conversation with Gemini and Libra. Taurus and Scorpio do not bow, and that stings. Aquarius opposite reminds Leo that other people wear crowns too.
Virgo
Virgo flows with Taurus and Capricorn and has a quiet understanding with Cancer and Scorpio. Gemini and Sagittarius make too many plans with too little care. Pisces opposite teaches that not everything has to be put in order.
Libra
Libra flows with Gemini and Aquarius and blossoms beside Leo and Sagittarius. Cancer and Capricorn are too serious for Libra, and Libra too undecided for them. Aries opposite decides for two, and sometimes that is a relief.
Scorpio
Scorpio flows with Cancer and Pisces, while Virgo and Capricorn give it reliability. With Leo and Aquarius it becomes a question of power. Taurus opposite simply stays seated while Scorpio tests, and passes the test that way.
Sagittarius
Sagittarius flows with Aries and Leo and travels happily with Libra and Aquarius. Virgo and Pisces ask for details it meant to skip. Gemini opposite is the one person who can tire it out in conversation.
Capricorn
Capricorn flows with Taurus and Virgo and thaws beside Scorpio and Pisces. Aries and Libra want things faster or lighter. Cancer opposite gives Capricorn a reason to go home in the evening.
Aquarius
Aquarius flows with Gemini and Libra, and Aries and Sagittarius leave it free. Taurus and Scorpio want to hold on, and Aquarius pulls its arm back. Leo opposite brings the warmth Aquarius tends to forget.
Pisces
Pisces flows with Cancer and Scorpio and finds solid ground with Taurus and Capricorn. Gemini and Sagittarius are too loud and too fast. Virgo opposite turns the dream into a plan with a date on it.
No pair is doomed and none is guaranteed
I have seen couples with nothing but trines between them who had run out of things to say after two years. And I know a married couple, Aries and Cancer, three squares between their charts, who have had tea together every evening for forty years. They still argue. They say it keeps them awake.
A synastry reading describes where things come easily between two people and where they take work. It does not say whether anyone does that work. That is astrology: tradition and interpretation, not science and not a verdict. Anyone who tells you two signs can never work has stopped looking.
If the first glance is all you want, “Uyum” in the app shows for free what two signs do with each other. For more depth it offers a longer reading with both birth dates. The names of the signs and planets are collected in the astrology lexicon.
Love is not a lock that only one key opens. It is a door two people open again every day.
Frequently asked questions
Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
By tradition, signs of the same element and of friendly elements: fire with air, earth with water. That only describes the sun signs, though. Moon, Venus and rising sign can shift the picture considerably.
Which zodiac signs are not compatible at all?
None. Signs in square, such as Aries and Cancer or Taurus and Leo, count as difficult because both want the same thing in different ways. Many steady couples have exactly this link. It takes more talking, nothing more.
What is the difference between synastry and sun sign compatibility?
Sun sign compatibility compares two Suns and nothing else. Synastry lays two complete birth charts over each other and compares Moons, Venus, Mars, ascendants and the angles between them.
Do I need my partner’s birth time?
For Sun, Venus and Mars the date is enough. The ascendant and the houses need the time, and it helps with the Moon, which changes sign roughly every two and a half days. Without a time a reading is still possible, only less fine.
Do opposites really attract?
Opposite signs often pull strongly towards each other, because each has what the other is missing. Whether that becomes balance or a standing quarrel depends on whether both can value what is foreign in the other or want to change it.
