Dreaming of being pregnant or of a baby: what it means
A pregnancy in a dream almost always speaks of something that is growing in your life. What it is, the feeling you woke with will tell you.
A woman of fifty three dreams of a round belly and of her own hand resting on it. Her children are grown, the question of another child was settled long ago. She wakes up puzzled and, to her own surprise, happy. Three weeks earlier she had started to paint again, after twenty years.
Dreams of pregnancy and of babies are among those I am asked about most. Women of every age have them, and so do men, more often than they admit. Only rarely are they about a real child. Much more often they are about something that has begun and cannot yet be seen from outside.
I read them the way I read every dream, as I describe in my guide to dream symbols: only the images that were really there, and the feeling on waking first. What follows is tradition and reflection. It is not medicine.
A pregnancy dream is not a pregnancy test
The most important thing first, because it is the question behind half the messages I receive: no dream can tell you whether you are pregnant. A belly in a dream cannot, a baby in your arms cannot, and no sign from an old dream book can either.
If you could be pregnant and want to know, a test from the pharmacy gives you an answer, and your doctor or midwife gives you certainty. I will never tell anyone “you are expecting” from a dream, and nobody who is honest with you will.
Two more things belong here. If you are pregnant, you may dream more vividly than usual, and sometimes frighteningly. Many pregnant women tell me that. Such dreams show how much is moving in you, they say nothing about how the pregnancy will go. Take real worries to the people who look after you. And if you do not want to be pregnant and the dream has left you uneasy, the same applies: the dream is not information about your body.
What dreaming of being pregnant means
In almost every tradition I know, a pregnancy in a dream stands for something that grows. The old Turkish dream books read it as abundance and as livelihood on its way. I read it more plainly: you are carrying something. A plan you have told nobody about. A change that has already started inside you. A responsibility that is coming towards you whether you ordered it or not.
Three questions bring you closer than any dictionary:
- What began in the last weeks or months? A new job, a course, a relationship, a decision you have not said out loud. The dream usually speaks of something recent.
- How far along were you? A barely visible belly belongs to something that has only just started. A belly shortly before birth tells you that something wants to come out soon, to be shown, said or handed in.
- Who knew about it in the dream? If you were hiding the belly, you are probably hiding the plan as well. If everybody was congratulating you, you may be wishing for a blessing that you could simply ask for.
And then the feeling. The same belly means one thing when you wake up warm and another when you wake up with a tight chest. A woman who is glad in the dream and frightened on waking is often someone who wants the new thing and does not yet trust herself with it.
Pregnancy and birth in dreams: the variations
These are the forms I hear most often. Take only the ones that were in your dream.
You are pregnant yourself
Something of your own is growing, and it needs time. The dream rarely wants a decision from you, it wants patience: nothing that is carried for months can be hurried. If the belly felt heavy, you are carrying more than you admit to others.
Someone else is pregnant
A sister, a friend, a colleague. This does not mean she is expecting, and please do not ask her because of your dream. Usually you sense that something new is starting in her life, or you see in her something that you wish to begin yourself. Envy on waking is an honest hint, not a flaw.
Giving birth
What was carried becomes visible. A birth in a dream stands for a finish that is also a beginning: handing in the thesis, opening the shop, saying the sentence. An easy birth shows that you are further than you think. A hard one shows the effort, not a bad outcome.
Twins
Two things at once. Often two plans that compete for the same strength, or one new thing with two sides, a joy and a burden. Ask yourself whether you can really carry both now, or whether one of them may wait.
A pregnancy you did not want
You are pregnant in the dream and feel only dread. Something has been handed to you that you did not choose: a task, an expectation, a role in the family. The dream asks whose wish this actually is.
Dreaming it as a man
Men dream of being pregnant too, and usually wake embarrassed. There is no reason. The image is the same: you are carrying something to term. Often it comes when a man is about to become responsible for something, a team, a business, a child, a parent who needs care.
Dreaming of a baby
A baby is what has already arrived: small, new, entirely dependent on care. Where the pregnancy is the waiting, the baby is the work. Look at what you did with it in the dream. Did you hold it, feed it, look for it?
A baby boy or a baby girl
Old dream books make a great deal of this, and they do not agree with each other. In Turkey many say a girl brings good news and a boy brings effort. I do not read it so strictly. What counts for me is how the child felt in your arms. If the sex of the baby was the strongest thing in the dream, ask what you connect with it yourself.
A crying baby
Something new in your life is not getting what it needs. A project you started and then left lying, a part of you that wants attention. If you could calm the baby, you already know what is missing. If you could not find it, the search is the message.
Losing or forgetting a baby
You left it in a shop, on a train, in a drawer. One of the most distressing dreams there is, and one of the most common among people who carry too much. It does not say that you are a careless person. It says that something that matters to you is slipping out of your day.
Breastfeeding
You are giving something of yourself, and it nourishes. A warm image when it felt peaceful. If it felt draining, you are feeding something or someone that takes more than you have.
A baby that is not yours
You find a child, or someone presses one into your arms. A task that came from outside and that you have nevertheless begun to love or to resent. The feeling on waking tells you which.
An older child
A child of four or six who walks and talks is something that has been with you for a while. Count back: what began in your life as many years ago as the child was old? This game is surprisingly often accurate.
Dreams of forgetting or losing a baby often come together with dreams of being late or being pursued. If you know those too, my article on falling, flying and being chased in dreams shows the same pressure from another side.
If you long for a child, or have lost one
Everything I have written so far is for dreams that come from nowhere. It is different when a child is the great subject of your life.
If you have been hoping for a child for a long time, a dream of a belly or a baby is first of all your longing, and it has every right to its place in the night. It is neither a promise nor a refusal. Please do not count such dreams as signs, in either direction. I have seen how much pain it adds when a beautiful dream is taken for an announcement and the month ends differently. The people who can really tell you something are your doctor and, if you are in treatment, your clinic. And somebody who simply listens.
If you have lost a child, in pregnancy, at birth or later, a dream of that child is not a symbol for a project, and I will never read it as one. It is grief, and it has a face. Some women tell me that the baby in the dream was well and that they woke up comforted. Others wake up in pieces. Both are yours, and neither is a message about guilt. There is nothing in such a dream that accuses you.
When these dreams come often, take your sleep or make the days hard, please do not stay alone with them. A midwife, your doctor, a grief counsellor or a therapist are the right people, and there are groups for parents who have lost a child. A dream reading can be a mirror. It cannot carry you. I have written more about the dreams that follow a loss in my article on dreaming of someone who has died.
What to do with a pregnancy or baby dream
- Write down the feeling first. One word. Glad, afraid, tender, overwhelmed.
- Name what is growing. Complete the sentence “At the moment I am carrying …” without thinking long. The first answer is usually the right one.
- Give it one small piece of care. A baby in a dream needs feeding, not a five year plan. One hour this week for the thing you named is enough.
- Tell it to the right person. In Turkey we say a good dream is told only to people who wish you well. That holds for plans too.
- Note whether it returns. A pregnancy dream that comes again and again, with the belly always the same size, tells of something that is not moving forward. How I read such dreams is described under recurring dreams.
If you like, write your dream to me in the app, with the feeling you woke with and whether it has come before. I interpret only what was really in it. You will find more images from the night in the dream interpretation section.
What you carry in a dream wants time, not an explanation.
Frequently asked questions
Does dreaming of being pregnant mean I am pregnant?
No. A dream cannot know anything about your body that a test would not show more reliably. In most cases a pregnancy dream speaks of a plan, a change or a responsibility that is growing. If a real pregnancy is possible, take a test and talk to your doctor.
What does it mean to dream of being pregnant when you do not want children?
Then the dream is very probably not about children at all. It shows that you are carrying something that needs time: a piece of work, a decision, a new stage of life. If you woke up with dread, ask yourself what has been put on you recently that you did not choose.
What does it mean to dream of a baby boy?
Traditions differ, and some old books read a boy as effort and a girl as good news. I pay more attention to what happened: whether you held the child, whether it was calm, how you felt on waking. A quiet baby in your arms is a good image, whatever its sex.
Why do I dream that I forgot my baby somewhere?
Because something important to you is getting too little attention at the moment. This dream comes to people with full days and many obligations, parents and people without children alike. It is a request to look at what you have put down, not a judgement of you.
I dreamed that my friend is pregnant. Should I tell her?
Tell her the dream if you are close and she would enjoy it, but do not present it as news. A dream of another person’s pregnancy speaks of your view of her, or of your own wish to begin something. If she is hoping for a child, I would keep it to myself.
Can a man dream of being pregnant?
Yes, and it is more common than men believe. The meaning is the same as for a woman: something is being carried to term, often a new responsibility. It says nothing about your masculinity and needs no further explanation than that.
