Dreaming of a deceased loved one, and dreams about death

When someone who has died comes into your dream, it is a meeting and not a warning. And a dream of dying speaks of an ending, never of a date.

Almost everyone who writes to me after a loss begins with the same sentence: “I saw her last night.” Then comes a detail, small and exact. She was wearing the blue cardigan. He was sitting in his chair and said nothing. She looked well, better than at the end.

And then the question, sometimes hopeful and sometimes frightened: what does it mean?

I will tell you how I read such dreams, and what the tradition I grew up in says about them. I will also tell you where my reading ends. I do not know where the dead are, and I will not pretend to. What I know is what these dreams do for the living. In the second half I come to the other dream that frightens people: dying in a dream, or seeing someone die who is alive.

When a deceased loved one appears in your dream

It is not an omen. That is the first thing, and for many people the most important. A dream of a dead mother, father, grandparent, partner or friend does not announce another death, and it does not come to fetch anyone.

What is it, then? In my experience one of three things, and often all of them together:

  • Memory. The person is part of you. Their voice, their gestures, their way of standing at the stove are stored in you more deeply than you know, and at night they come out.
  • Farewell. Especially when there was no time for one. The dream gives back the hour that the hospital, the distance or the suddenness took away.
  • An unfinished conversation. A question you never asked, a quarrel that was not settled, a thank you that was not said. The dream returns to this spot until it has become quieter.

As with every dream, the feeling on waking decides. If you wake up warm, the dream has given you something, and you may simply keep it. If you wake up heavy, something is still open. It is the same method I describe in dream symbols, only with more at stake.

Whether it “really was” her? I cannot tell you, and no one can. Many people feel these dreams as visits, clearer and calmer than ordinary dreams. I do not take that from anyone. You do not have to decide what it was in order to accept what it gave you.

Dreaming of the dead: what the variations mean

Take only what was in your dream. I add nothing.

The deceased speaks to you

Listen to the words, and write them down at once, they fade quickly. Very often they are sentences the person said in life, or sentences you needed to hear. Advice from a dead father is usually your own knowledge in his voice, and that does not make it worth less.

The deceased is silent

They sit there, look at you, say nothing. Many people are troubled by this. I read it as presence: not everything has to be said. If the silence felt peaceful, it was a peaceful dream. If it weighed on you, ask what you would have wanted to hear.

The deceased smiles or looks well

Healthy again, younger, without the illness. This is one of the most consoling dreams there is, and it often comes some months after the death. It shows that your memory is beginning to give the person back to you as they were, and not only as they were at the end.

The deceased gives you something

Bread, a key, money, a piece of clothing. In Turkey this is read as a blessing: what the dead give is good. Look at what it was. A key opens, bread nourishes, a ring binds. Often it is something the person really did give you in life: a skill, an attitude, a place in the family.

The deceased asks for something or takes something

They are hungry, cold, ask for water, or take something from your hand. Old tradition says this calls for care, and it means care for the dead, not danger for you: say a prayer, give something to someone in need in their name, visit the grave. I find that a wise answer. It turns a heavy dream into something you can do.

The deceased is alive again

You dream it was all a mistake, they are back, and nobody is surprised. Waking from this is hard. The dream does not mock you. It shows how much in you still expects them at the door. This dream becomes rarer with time, and that too is part of mourning.

The deceased is angry or sad

A dream that hurts. Almost always it is your own guilt that has taken their face: I should have called, I should have been there. The dead in our dreams say what we accuse ourselves of. Speak about it with a living person. It is lighter when it is said aloud.

What tradition says about dreams of the dead

In Turkey, a dream of someone who has died is not hidden. It is told at the breakfast table, and the first answer is always “hayırdır inşallah”: may it mean something good. My grandmother in Izmir then asked two things: did he give you something, or did he take something? And how did he look?

What the dead give was a blessing for her. If the dead took something, or asked for something, she did not turn pale. She cooked, gave a plate to the neighbours in his name and said a prayer. That was the whole answer of the tradition: remember them, and do something good.

A heavy dream was not carried through the day. You told it to running water, at the tap in the morning, and let the water take it. And there was the sentence I have heard a hundred times: “Rüya tersine çıkar”, a dream often turns out the other way round. Whoever sees death in a dream, they said, will live long.

Other traditions know the same thoughts. The Arabic books of dream interpretation devote many pages to seeing the dead, and the old masters are still quoted in families today. I pass all of this on as what it is: handed down wisdom about how to live with such nights. It is not proof, and it promises nothing.

Dreaming of your own death

You fall, you are ill, you lie there and know: this is it. Then you wake up, and the fright stays for hours.

A dream of your own death is not a prediction. I have never read it as one, and no serious tradition I know does. Almost always it shows an ending: a stage of life, a role, a version of you. Someone leaves a job after fifteen years and dreams of their funeral. Someone becomes a mother, and the woman she was before dies in the dream. The old makes room, much like the snake that sheds its skin, an image I describe in dreaming of snakes.

The same thought lies in the tarot card that people fear most. Why Death in the cards means transformation and not doom, I explain in my article on the feared tarot cards.

Notice how you died in the dream, and above all how it felt. Calm, almost relieved? Then you are ready to let something go. Panic? Then something is ending that you still want to hold. If you were falling, you will find more in falling, flying and being chased.

And very practically: if you are afraid for your health, that is a question for a doctor. A dream is not a finding.

Dreaming that someone living dies

Your mother, your child, your partner dies in the dream, and you wake up crying. This dream does not predict anything either. I say that with all the firmness I have, because I know how long this fear can sit in the body.

It usually shows one of two things. Either the fear of losing this person, which is simply the other side of love, and which becomes louder when they are ill, far away or getting older. Or a change between you: a child is growing up and no longer needs you in the old way, a friendship is changing its form. What dies in the dream is then the old shape of the relationship.

Should you tell the person? I would not say “I dreamed you died”. The tradition of keeping a heavy dream to yourself is kind here. But call. Ask how they are, say something friendly. That is what the dream wanted from you.

Dreams in grief: when you need more than a reading

In the first months after a death, dreams are often intense. Some people dream of the dying itself, again and again: the hospital room, the phone call. Others do not dream of the dead person at all and suffer from that, as if they had been forgotten. Neither says anything about how much you loved. Dreams do not come on request, and their absence is not a verdict.

If a dream of the dead returns in the same form for weeks, it is worth reading it as I describe under recurring dreams: what changes from one time to the next? Often the person moves a little further away each time, and that is the mourning doing its work.

But there is a limit, and I name it clearly. If the dreams take your sleep, if the images follow you through the day, if guilt eats at you or you no longer see the point in going on, a dream reading is the wrong place. Then please speak to your doctor, to a grief counsellor, a therapist or a bereavement group. If the thought comes that you do not want to live any more, call a crisis line or the emergency number today, not tomorrow. Asking for help is no betrayal of the dead.

For all the other nights: write the dream down, light a candle if that is your way, and say thank you for the visit. If you want, tell it to me in the app, with the feeling you woke with. I interpret only what was really there. More about the images of the night is in the dream interpretation section.

Whoever is seen in a dream has not been forgotten.

Frequently asked questions

Is dreaming of a dead relative a bad omen?

No. It is not a warning and it announces no further death. Such a dream shows memory, farewell or something left unsaid. In Turkish tradition it is even considered good when the deceased gives you something or looks content.

What does it mean when a deceased person talks to you in a dream?

Pay attention to the exact words and to how you felt when you heard them. Often they are sentences that the person said in life, or the comfort you need now. Write them down straight after waking, such words are among the first things to fade.

Why do I never dream of my deceased mother?

Many grieving people ask this, and it hurts. Dreams cannot be forced, and their absence says nothing about your bond. Sometimes they come only after months or years, when the first heaviness has eased. You may speak to her while awake too.

What does it mean to dream of your own death?

It stands for an ending and a change: a chapter closes, a role is put down. It is not a prediction and no sign of illness. If you are worried about your health, that worry belongs with a doctor, whatever you dreamed.

I dreamed that my father, who is alive, died. Will it happen?

The dream does not tell you that. It shows your fear of losing him, or a change in how you stand to each other. Call him and spend time with him, that is the sensible answer to this dream.

What does it mean when the dead give you money in a dream?

In the tradition I come from, a gift from the dead is a blessing, whatever it is. I would add: ask what this person gave you in life that still supports you. Do not expect a windfall from it, a dream is no announcement of money.
