Dream of falling, flying or being chased: the meaning
Falling, flying, being chased: almost everyone knows these three dreams. They are rarely about what happens in the picture, and nearly always about how you are moving through your life right now.
There are dreams you see with your eyes and dreams you dream with your whole body. You fall, and your stomach falls with you. You run, and your legs are as heavy as wet sand. You fly, and on waking you can still feel the wind along your arms.
These movement dreams are told to me almost daily, in every language, by people of every age. They are so common that many assume there must be one fixed meaning. There is not. But there is a direction each of these images usually points in, and a question you can ask yourself about it.
I will go through them in turn. The same rule applies to each as to all dream symbols: the feeling you wake with decides which way the image points.
Falling in a dream
A dream of falling is about support. Somewhere in your life something is standing less firmly than usual: a job, a relationship, a plan, sometimes only the idea you have of yourself. Turkish folk belief reads “rüyada düşmek”, falling in a dream, quite strictly as a loss of standing. I read it more widely, and above all I read the feeling with it.
If you wake with a start, you are afraid of losing something that holds you up. If you wake relieved, the fall was a letting go. Some people fall in a dream just after they have resigned or ended a relationship, and wake up light. That is not a bad dream. That is a body that has finally stopped holding on.
One thing does not belong here: the jolt as you drift off, when a leg kicks and you seem to drop for a moment. Nearly everyone knows it, and it is the body finding its way into sleep, not an image that needs reading.
Falling from a height
A roof, a bridge, a cliff. The higher the place, the more you have built up or taken on recently. The dream asks whether you trust yourself at the height where you are standing.
Falling without end
No ground, only the falling. Usually a situation whose outcome you cannot see. The uncertainty itself is the subject, not an impact that is coming.
Tripping and stumbling
A small fall, on the stairs, on the pavement. This is about a single step: a mistake you fear, or a hurry that is not doing you good.
Falling and landing softly
You land and it does not hurt. One of the most comforting dreams there is. Something you were afraid of is gentler than you thought.
After a falling dream, ask yourself: what am I holding on to right now, and do I really have to?
Being chased in a dream
No dream is as plain as this one. Something is after you and you run. In almost every case it is something you are avoiding while awake: a bill, a conversation, a decision, a feeling there is no room for at the moment.
What matters is not who is chasing you but that you do not turn round. Many people tell me they never saw the pursuer. They only know it is there. What is not looked at grows larger in a dream.
Here too the feeling turns the dream. Panic means the matter is pressing. If you wake irritated or tired rather than afraid, you are weary of running, and that is a good beginning.
Chased by a stranger
A matter without a face: pressure, a deadline, an expectation. The less you can make out, the more general the worry.
Chased by an animal
A dog, a bull, a snake. Animals often stand for something of your own that you do not allow: anger, desire, hunger for something. Dreaming of snakes deserves a look of its own, the snake carries a long tradition.
Chased by someone you know
Then it is rarely about that person and mostly about what is unresolved between you. This is especially common with former partners. There is more on that under dreams about an ex.
Hiding
You have stopped running and are holding your breath. You are hoping something will pass by itself. Sometimes it does. Often it finds you again in the next dream.
Ask yourself: what would have happened if I had stopped and turned round? Some people actually manage it in a later dream. The pursuer is usually smaller than expected.
Flying in a dream
The flying dream is the counterpart of the fall. You leave the ground and it feels right. The old Turkish and Arabic tradition often reads flying as a journey or a rise in standing. I read it as overview: you see from above a situation that held you fast down below.
Many people flew often in dreams as children and hardly ever as adults. When flying comes back, it is nearly always a good sign. Something in you is daring more again.
The rule still holds, though. If you fly and are afraid of the height, you may have risen faster than you are comfortable with. If you wake wistful because it was only a dream, the flight is showing you what you lack in daily life: room.
Flying high and calm
You are equal to a situation. Notice what you saw from above, your own town, the sea, a house. That is where your gaze goes in waking life too.
Just above the ground
You paddle with your arms and barely clear the hedges. You want more than you allow yourself, or something is holding you: a duty, a doubt, a person.
Unable to take off
You know you can fly and it will not work. Common in times when you are waiting for a yes or for permission. Ask yourself whose permission that is.
Dropping in mid-flight
The flight turns into a fall. Usually the worry that something good will not last. Look at the ending: if you catch yourself again, you have more trust in yourself than the fright suggests.
Ask yourself: what did I get free of in the dream, and what would stop me doing that awake?
Unable to run or scream
You want to run and your legs will not obey. You want to shout and no sound comes. This dream is related to the chase, but it says something different. It is not about avoiding. It is about the feeling of being unable to do anything.
Legs that will not run usually show a situation in which you want to act and do not know how, or are not allowed to. A voice that fails shows something unsaid. I always ask: who were you trying to call out to, and what? The sentence that would not come out in the dream is often exactly the one that is due in waking life.
In Turkey there is a word for this, “karabasan”, the dark weight that sits on your chest at night. Grandmothers said a prayer against it and left the light on. I will add something sober: if you often wake and for a few moments truly cannot move, or if it frightens you badly, talk to a doctor about it. That is no longer a question of interpretation.
Being late, exams, naked in public, losing things
These are the quiet relatives of the three big dreams. They move the body less than the face you show to others.
Being late
The train pulls out, the airport is a maze, the suitcase is not packed. You are carrying too much at once, or afraid of missing a chance. Look at where you were heading. The destination matters more than the delay.
Exam dreams
You sit an exam you have not studied for, often in a subject from school, decades later. Somewhere you feel judged. Odd and comforting: this dream comes mostly to people who passed their exams back then.
Naked in public
You are standing in the office or the street without clothes. The fear of being seen through, or of having shown something of yourself you would rather have kept. Notice whether anyone reacts. Very often nobody in the dream notices, and that is the real message.
Losing something
Keys, a bag, a phone, sometimes a child whose hand you were holding. You are worried about something entrusted to you, or about a part of yourself you lose sight of in everyday life. Ask what the object opens for you, or who it connects you to.
Not finding the way
Corridors, doors, stairs that end somewhere other than expected. You face a choice with too many options. The dream does not want a quick decision. It only shows that you are missing a map.
Three questions for every movement dream
If you take only three things from this text, take these questions. I ask them in this order.
- How did I feel on waking? Write the word down before you note anything else. Fear, relief, annoyance, wistfulness. That word turns the dream.
- Where in my life am I moving like this? Where am I falling, where am I running away, where am I stuck, where would I like to take off? Something nearly always comes to mind at once. Take the first thing.
- How did the dream end? Caught, overtaken, landed, woken in the middle. The ending shows what you believe yourself capable of.
If the same dream keeps returning, read it differently. A recurring dream shows its message in what changes from night to night, not in the image itself.
And a limit I always name: dream reading is tradition and an occasion to think about yourself. It is not psychology and not medicine. If nightmares wake you often, if you dread going to sleep or are worn out during the day, a doctor or a therapist is the right person to see.
If you like, write your dream to me in the app, with the feeling you woke with and whether it recurs. I only read the images that were really in it.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean when you fall in a dream?
Usually it is about support: something in your life is standing less firmly right now. Dreamt with fright, the fall shows fear of a loss. Dreamt with relief, it shows a letting go that is good for you.
Do you die if you hit the ground in a dream?
No, that is an old rumour. Plenty of people land in their dreams, some hard, some softly, and wake up perfectly normally. That most people wake before landing is down to the fright, not to any danger.
Why am I always being chased in my dreams?
Because there is something in waking life you are still avoiding. The dream repeats until you look at it. Write down when it comes and how close the pursuer gets each time.
What does flying in a dream mean?
Usually overview and confidence: you see from above something that held you fast below. Laboured flying close to the ground shows that you want more than you are allowing yourself right now.
Why can’t I scream or run in my dreams?
The dream mostly shows the feeling of being powerless in some matter, or something you are not saying out loud. Ask yourself what you wanted to shout. If you often truly cannot move after waking, that belongs in a conversation with a doctor.
Why do I still dream about exams years after school?
Because the exam is the strongest image you have for being judged. The dream comes when you feel measured, at work or at home. More images and how to read them are in the dream interpretation section.
